I work for a small startup in the Silicon Valley, and as the only woman of childbearing age in the company, it falls on me to set the standard for our company's maternity leave policy. No one's saying we working moms (or working preggos) can have it all, but there are definitely tried and true best practices for navigating the whole WWP (working while pregnant/a parent) situation.

I bought this book for a friend and ended up reading it myself. It's everything it promises. It's well written, easy to read, offers PRACTICAL advice that makes great sense and helps you realize you are not alone in this journey of figuring out how to navigate parenthood and a career. I wish it had been available when I had my first! Thanks to the author for her great work.
As someone who has never really considered the implications that becoming a parent has on a woman's career, this book was incredibly eye-opening. Ally leaves no stone unturned when it comes to planning for a child while advancing your career. By covering topics like premature birth, bed rest, adoption leave and crafting your company's maternity policy, she offers realistic advice for every scenario - even the least expected (or desired). I highly recommend this book to anyone who has considered having a family in addition to a career (both male + female). The advice and resources included throughout this book are invaluable.
While reading this book on a trip I got a job offer. The practical advice included in Downey's book spans beyond basic "how to succeed in your job while pregnant or parenting". I found myself using language from the book during my negotiations with my future employer. I got a true sense of confidence after each chapter. As parents we add a value to our companies and shouldn't shy away from discussions that we often assume will hurt our chances of furthering our careers. I'll be sending this to some friends for Mother's Day.
This book is an easy read and has a lot of helpful ideas for navigating the office return post baby. I wish there was more content on navigating the return after baby 2 though because that is definitely different than coming back after baby one.
My only reason for not giving5 stars was because the book often refers you to the website for info. That is ok for linking up to other resources, but I didn't like that I had to go to an additional source for checklists.
"Here's the Plan" is basically one big toolkit for women entering and navigating through the waters of motherhood and professional life. As noted in the title, this book is highly tactical, resulting not only in readers who are educated on the many challenges associated with pregnancy, parenting, and being a professional, but, more importantly, readers who are equipped to address those challenges.
I recommend this book to ALL women - be them future mothers or not. It is evident to me after reading HTP that it is equally as important for non-mothers to understand the challenges of their co-workers with children and to know how best to support them.
Allyson does a great job of including pithy, real-life anecdotes from women who've been through the trenches. She is careful to avoid the "shoulds" and implicit judgements that can often creep into these types of books and isolate certain segments of mothers. I anticipate that working moms will appreciate her candid writing style and her general openness with a periodic "Amen, sister" while reading.
I can't remember the chain of internet links that led me to this book, but it's been incredibly helpful as I transition to a full-time job post baby (it's my first baby AND my first full-time job--I've always been a freelancer in the past). When I'm feeling overwhelmed, I just remember that all the moms she interviewed figured it out, so I'm sure I'll be able to.
I met the author at her book party in San Francisco and her advice to build our networks really resonated with me. It's been a voice in the back of my head that has strengthened many connections already.
Buy this, read it for yourself, and then give it to all your friends BEFORE they get pregnant (or anytime, really)!
I wish I had had this book when I was navigating returning to work after the birth of my second! I think this is a great resource for moms who hope to continue being a real force and contributor at work, while being the mom they want to be at home, too. Very practical advice written in an incredibly easy to read way. I'm putting this book in all the baby shower gift baskets I give from this point forward!
